The Snow Shed

The weather has been bad here over the last week or so and temperatures have been very low.

So far the The Reef Shed has been doing pretty well, the Xtratherm  insulation has been doing the Job.  The temp outside varied between +4 degrees Celsius to -10 degrees Celsius so that is quiet cold for these parts. It has not been this “wintery” since the early 1980′s. The inside of The Reef Shed stayed a nice +20 degrees Celsius to 24 degrees Celsius.

Who would have imagined, growing Corals in the Snow!

PS: Look at the neighbours shed, that is not a shed!!!

Keeping it Warm

As winter time is here and temperatures are dropping below Freezing I got some advise on my thread on UltimateReef to lay some insulation on the floor.

So with that I did so. I only had 1 sheet of Xtratherm left so I cut it in half and lay each half under the Racking on each side.Floor_ Insulation002

I am also added 2 large water storage barrels which will serve as a heat sink and also be used for topup and Water Changes.

There was not enough  Xtratherm to cover the Center Walkway part so I used some 2″x4″ that I had left lying around to fill the gap between the Left and Right Racking.

There are some gaps I need to fill but that will be done when I get another Sheet of Xtratherm.

I must say there is a difference with the floor covered. Once all the gaps are filled  there will be another improvement on the insulation.

So far so good!

Keeping it Snug

With the Concrete Slab and Shed now in Place the next steps is to make sure that the shed stays nice and warm.

TheReefShed_BeforeInsulation

There is enough insulation purchased to cover the entire inside of the shed. I used 2″ Xtratherm insulation to make sure everything stays nice and warm.

Some pics of the insulation being installed. I used expandable foam to fill in ALL the gaps.

Once the Insulation was done and covered I assembled the racking that will hold the Frag tanks.

TheReefShed_RackingInPlaceIt fits like it was made for it, perfect. I got the idea of the racking from a friend of mine who owns a warehouse, he uses much larger versions for his stock. Each pair of Orange bars is able to hold +200KG, more then enough for the frag tanks.

Then there is the aftermath…

It is getting there slowly but surely.
